Tasting Note
In contrast to the almost exuberant expressiveness of several prior vintages of Brulées, the ’99 is quite reserved though aggressive swirling finally coaxes the first hints of secondary development and gorgeous spice notes on the plum and dark pinot fruit suffused nose. The remarkably rich and still relatively youthful big-bodied flavors are stylish and pure while culminating in a mouth coating and strikingly intense finish where a discreet touch of wood surfaces. Despite the imposing size, weight and power, this is a ’99 that could be drunk now with pleasure even though the supporting structure has not yet completely softened. As such while some may enjoy this for what it already has to offer, for my preferences I would continue to let this slumber for at least another 4 to 7 years. In sum, 1999 is a great vintage for this wine. Tasted by Allen Meadows in June 2015
